Introduction to Beekeeping


Saturday, September 24th, 4pm – 7pm

This workshop will give you all the necessary knowledge and confidence to start your own hive and begin beekeeping. Jon will discuss the basics of the honeybee lifecycle; hives and beekeeping equipment; diseases and pests; honey and how to extract it; and how to get your own bees.

On Saturday September 24th Jon will delve into the intricacies of beekeeping. Then on the following Saturday, October 1st, at 11am there will be an extra short session with Jon as he takes you to his hives and shows you his bees and the inner workings of the hive. This is an add-on session for $50 which can be purchased after you’ve learnt all the beekeeping basics.

When Jon Lee moved to Rocky Hill he needed to find a new hobby to support his infinite sweet tooth. Previously he satisfied that by tapping maples on his property to make maple syrup.  His new place didn’t have the requisite trees so he turned to beekeeping for its sweet rewards. Seven years later, with the knowledge that he’s gained, he has turned the hobby into a successful honey business with an increasing number of hives at two farms as well as his own property. Jon keeps a few hives at Cherry Grove Farm.

1910 - Leased land to dairy farmer

1987 - Hamill Brothers inherit farm

2002 - Started as a family business

2003 - Started a beef herd, laying hens, and pigs

2004 - Added sheep and attained organic certification of pasture land

2005 - Added dairy herd and began making fresh cheeses like mozzarella

2006 - Built aging caves and began making aged cheeses

2012 - Grid Magazine’s Cheese of the Month (Nov – Full Nettle Jack); Finalist at the Good Food Awards (Toma)

2013 - Won 2 blue ribbons from the American Cheese Society(for Buttercup Brie and Lawrenceville Jack Reserve); Added second cheesemaker

2014 - Broke ground on additional aging space and began process of getting AWA certification for our chickens
